The word "astrolabe" comes etymologically from the Greek and refers to "star finder".
It is an astronomical measuring instrument that was of great help to mariners until the 18th century, at which time it was replaced by the sextant.
This ancient navigation instrument, as its etymological origin indicates, is used to locate the stars in space, as well as to know the time and latitude. In its origins it was a great help not only for navigators but also for astronomers and scientists, since it allows determining the position and movement of the stars on the horizon.
