The weight of the binoculars, a key factor.

Feb. 29, 2020
The weight of the binoculars is a primary factor in choosing a binocular, but also its basic characteristics.
The weight of the binoculars, a key factor.
What does the weight of a binocular depend on?

The weight of a binocular is key in your choice, it is a feature that has evolved a lot over the years, progressively decreasing. So today we find much lighter binoculars that have nothing to do with those so heavy, for example, from the 70s and 80s.

Mainly the weight of the binocular depends on three factors, the first the size, which is directly related to the aperture of the lens, to more aperture, bigger and more weight. The second, the material for manufacturing the housing or body and finally the material for the lenses.

Thus, today we can conclude that it has been improved by using lighter materials in the construction of the binocular and thus we can have binoculars of 32mm or higher, at a very comfortable weight.

Tips according to use

The type of use will completely determine the binocular to choose and its weight. If we want a travel binocular we need a model that is as light as possible, normally it will be 25 to 32mm wide, and between 300 and 500gr.

For nature observation, then we recommend the models from 32 to 42mm opening and with weights that can range between 400 and 750gr

For hunting or constant observation in the same place, then we can choose openings between 42 and 56mm, but they will be teams already between 800 and 1200gr of weight. These models can also vary between 10 and 15X magnification, and sometimes we will need a tripod to stabilize the image and give us more viewing comfort.

Special cases

Astronomical binoculars or viewpoints are a very special case, in these models we can have weights greater than 2kg and therefore impossible to hold in hand. At this time we necessarily need a tripod, which is capable of supporting the weight of the binocular guaranteeing total stability.

They are models with an opening greater than 70 and 80mm, either for night observation (astronomical) or for panoramic observation, in viewpoints or watchtowers. To choose the tripod we must take into account its load capacity, which should be between 1.5kg and 2kg higher than the equipment's weights.

Weight and ways of holding and transporting

Every binocular must include a carrying strap to hang it around your neck. Normally these straps are slightly padded at the neck, so as not to scratch or sting the skin.

In heavier binoculars, or if it has to be observed long enough, the brands have developed the arness system. This is a very comfortable system, it distributes the weight very well and allows us a very easy and recommended use. They are attached to our back and at the same time to the binocular, being very practical.

As for the binoculars holster, there are two options, usually the lightest binoculars, they have a holster with a belt clip and the largest binoculars, a neck strap or a bag.
