The portable and easily transportable instrument that allows measuring angular distances and the height of the stars to determine latitude is called a sextant.
Generally the reference star is the Sun: knowing its height, looking at the horizon and the time of day, the sextant is configured as an ideal tool to determine the latitude at which the observer is.
Being more precise, this device replaced the astrolabe and is of great importance among boaters. Despite the fact that today there are more modern mechanisms such as GPS, it is still eminently practical to have a sextant because it does not require electricity and can be used in any situation.
